JPMorgan Chase Mandates Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Main Office Admission

The financial institution has told employees moving into its new main office in NYC that they have to submit their biological identifiers to access the multibillion-dollar skyscraper.

Change from Optional to Required

The financial firm had originally planned for the enrollment of physical identifiers at its recently opened high-rise to be discretionary.

However, staff of the biggest American bank who have commenced employment at the corporate hub since August have obtained emails stating that biometric access was now "compulsory".

Understanding the Biometric System

This security method requires staff to provide their fingerprints to pass through security gates in the entrance area instead of scanning their access passes.

Headquarters Details

The main office building, which allegedly cost $3bn to develop, will ultimately function as a workplace for 10,000 workers once it is completely filled in the coming months.

Protection Reasoning

JP Morgan did not provide a statement but it is assumed that the use of biometric data for entry is intended to make the facility more secure.

Special Cases

There are exceptions for specific personnel who will still be able to use a badge for access, although the requirements for who will employ more standard badge entry remains unspecified.

Supporting Mobile Applications

In addition to the deployment of physical identifier systems, the organization has also introduced the "Work at JPMC" smartphone application, which serves as a electronic pass and hub for employee services.

The platform enables users to manage visitor access, explore indoor maps of the facility and schedule dining from the premises' multiple food service providers.

Security Context

The implementation of enhanced security measures comes as business organizations, particularly those with significant operations in New York, look to enhance safety following the incident of the CEO of one of the biggest American insurance companies in July.

Brian Thompson, the leader of the healthcare company, was fatally shot not far from JP Morgan's offices.

Additional Office Considerations

It is uncertain if JP Morgan intends to introduce the biometric system for employees at its locations in other major financial centres, such as London.

Employee Tracking Developments

The action comes during discussion over the use of digital tools to observe staff by their organizations, including monitoring physical presence metrics.

Previously, all staff members on flexible arrangements were directed they must return to the physical location full-time.

Executive Perspective

The company's leader, the financial executive, has characterized JP Morgan's state-of-the-art 60-storey headquarters as a "beautiful physical manifestation" of the organization.

Dimon, one of the global financial leaders, lately cautioned that the likelihood of the US stock market facing a downturn was significantly higher than many investors anticipated.
